Meet The Team

Dr. Matthew Lau
Matthew grew up in Alameda. He went to Alameda High, UC Davis, and dental school at UCSF. He worked all over Northern California, but was very happy to return home to Alameda.
As a child, Matthew was raised to be an engineer, and grew up around slide rules and drafting utensils. He changed to healthcare, only after going on a mission trip to Mexico.
Early in his career, he sought out the best and the brightest to compensate for his youth and inexperience. He chased after Dr. Bill Strupp, after Dr. Tom Basta, after Dr. Carl Misch. He got a Fellowship from the International Congress of Oral Implantology on special commendation from Dr. Misch in 2014. However, his greatest influence was Dr. Finn Tonsberg of Alameda.
Early in his career, Matthew’s hobbies included martial arts, building guitars, making gelato, and reviewing dental cases. He served on the Alameda County Dental society’s board of directors, the Northern California Asian American Dental Association’s board of directors, and was on the Continued Education Committee of the Sacramento Dental Society. He also served at the Berkeley Free Clinic and headed a school outreach to local public schools to teach children on how to avoid cavities.
Nowadays, Matthew is busy with his young family. He can be found chasing his toddler around after work, fixing/cleaning up the house, or supporting his wife with her career change front he tech industry to teaching. When he isn’t busy with family, he is trying to learn new recipes to improve his dentistry, parenting, and gelato.
Matthew can empathize with anyone scared of dentists, as he too was afraid of them too. So, Matthew is able to meet patients where they are.
Matthew believes he was called to be a dentist, and wants to honor God with his work.

Dr. Tiffany Sum
Dr. Tiffany Sum has been practicing dentist for 5 years; she completed her residency training at Alameda Health System Highland Hospital with experience in working on a variety of patients including the medically complex and special needs. In addition to practicing, she has gained experiences in mentoring both UCSF students and residents at Highland across the Alameda Health System sites. Having worked at such an institution, she has found pleasure and rewarding being able to serve the community, especially those in need and the underserved, and most importantly, making a difference in patients' lives whether big or small. Outside of dentistry, she enjoys cooking, exploring new recipes, and spending time in nature via hiking and exploring the bay area, taking one breath of fresh air at a time.
