Nightguards/Occlusal Splints

Frequently Asked Questions

FOSA

We build our nightguards to last decades, not months.

We follow the FACE guidelines established by Dr. Tom Basta:  Posterior centric support without lateral interferences, and a shallow anterior ramp to reduce TMJ strain.

TDLR:  Our nightguards protect your teeth, reduce grinding, and can be repaired/relined.

NTI

For gaggers, the NTI might be more comfortable.

The NTI was developed by Dr. Jim Boyd to greatly reduce TMJ muscle overactivation and pain.  It is far smaller than a FOSA, but should be used alongside with a joint repositioning device.

TLDR:   Works.  Way less bulky.   Needs a morning splint

Do you need a nightguard?

Maybe not.

Dr. Lau has found that TMJ related pain involves many factors and causes.

He won a student award from Dr. Charles McNeil of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain in 2009.  Since then, he has been learning more about TMJ pain management and prevention.
